Ingredients 

Dough

  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water 110°F
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter melted

Baking Soda Bath

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 4 cups water boiling

Topping

  • 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
  • to taste coarse salt

Instructions 

  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil.
  6. Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and shape into a pretzel.
  7. Dip each pretzel into the boiling baking soda bath for 30 seconds. Place on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg yolk mixture and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
