Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 4 large onions thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup white wine optional
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • 4 slices French bread toasted
  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Instructions 

  1. 1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat.
  2. 2. Add the onions and cook until caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  3. 3. Stir in the sugar and cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. 4. Add the white wine and simmer until reduced by half.
  5. 5. Add the beef broth, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  6. 6. Preheat the oven to broil.
  7. 7. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread and grated cheese.
  8. 8. Broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
